Hero Tier List & Guide
Whiteout Survival releases its combat heroes in generations: a state starts with 17 heroes, then unlocks a new trio (one Infantry, one Lancer, one Marksman) every few months, up to Gen 16 in our roster. The best hero for you is almost always the best one your state has unlocked for each troop type, so this guide ranks heroes inside their generation rather than in one long list.
The troop types, rarities and generations below come straight from our hero roster. The tiers are opinion: the consensus of several community tier lists, checked in October 2026. Where the lists disagree by a full tier we say so, and the newest generations are only ranked by one list so far.
How to read the tiers
- Top pick: rated at or near the top by the community lists. Worth long-term shards, gear and skill manuals.
- Solid: good in its generation and often worth building while you wait for the next one, but not where your scarce resources go first.
- Stepping stone: early Epic heroes you'll use for your first rallies and events, then replace. Avoid spending Mythic-grade resources on them.
- * means the lists split by a full tier; † means only one list ranks the hero so far.

What the consensus says
Gen 1. Jeronimo (Infantry) is the one Gen 1 hero every list keeps at the top: a rally lead whose value lasts well past the early game.
Natalia (Infantry) and Molly (Lancer) are the other two Mythic Gen 1 combat heroes. Lists range from top tier to "replace later" on both, so build them early and expect newer heroes to take their slots. Some older lists file Natalia (Infantry) under Marksman by mistake. The Epic heroes such as Sergey (Infantry) and Bahiti (Marksman) carry you through the first weeks, then step aside.
Gen 2 to Gen 4. Mia (Lancer, Gen 3) is the stand-out lancer of the early generations and is often called the longest-lasting hero in the game.
Flint (Infantry, Gen 2) and Alonso (Marksman, Gen 2) are solid upgrades on the Gen 1 roster. In Gen 4 the lists split between Reina (Lancer) and Lynn (Marksman), so pick the one that fills your weakest troop type.
Gen 5 to Gen 9. These are the heroes most mid-game states fight with.
Hector (Infantry, Gen 5), Bradley (Marksman, Gen 7), Gatot (Infantry, Gen 8) and Sonya (Lancer, Gen 8) are consistent top picks, and Gen 9 brings Magnus (Infantry) and Fred (Lancer). Gen 6 has no clear winner: the lists disagree on Wu Ming (Infantry) and Renee (Lancer).
Gen 10 and later. Each new generation tends to outclass the last.
Blanchette (Marksman, Gen 10), Eleonora (Infantry, Gen 11), Vulcanus (Marksman, Gen 13) and Estrella (Lancer, Gen 15) are top picks across the lists. Rankings for Gen 12 onward come from fewer sources, so treat them as provisional until the community settles.
Expedition and development heroes
Some heroes are built for gathering, construction or research speed rather than combat. Their troop type matters little, and they aren't ranked above:
| Hero | Troop | Rarity | Generation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smith | Infantry | Rare | Gen 1 |
| Eugene | Infantry | Rare | Gen 1 |
| Charlie | Lancer | Rare | Gen 1 |
| Cloris | Marksman | Rare | Gen 1 |
| Ling Xue | Lancer | Epic | Gen 1 |
| Jasser | Marksman | Epic | Gen 1 |
| Seo-yoon | Marksman | Epic | Gen 1 |
| Zinman | Marksman | Mythic | Gen 1 |
Investment advice
- One hero per troop type first. A march takes up to three heroes, and each hero mainly boosts its own troop type, so the usual line-up is one of each. Concentrate shards, Hero XP and gear on your best hero of each type before building a second team.
- Save for the next generation. Mythic shards and gear are scarce. If a new generation is a few weeks away (check the State Timeline), stop pushing a "Solid" hero and save.
- Stars before skills. Star level caps skill level. The Hero Upgrade guide has the costs.
- Gear follows your keepers. Hero gear is a long project, so put it on top picks. Plan the cost with the Hero Gear Calculator.
